Collecting Stuffed Animals: The Collector’s Primer

There are plenty of stuffed animals that are barely worth what you paid for them. However, there are plenty that are worth much more. Collecting them has become one of the hottest hobbies around, as the quest for those rare and valuable pieces is a lot of fun.

Antique stuffed animals are generally considered to be the most valuable. This holds true unless the stuffed animal is in poor condition. Though antique stuffed animals are expected to have at least some wear and tear, those that are missing eyes, limbs, or have been ripped or torn will not be as valuable.

Newer stuffed animals that are rare, or part of a limited edition, are the most valuable of all modern stuffed collectibles. There is a chance that these will drop in value over time, but this is a risk you take when purchasing any collectible. If newer stuffed animals appeal to you, consider purchasing ones that are individually numbered and were produced in limited numbers. Beginners should look for recognizable brands, as these are the most likely to be worth money.

Online auctions are one of the best places to find new additions to your collection. Flea markets and yard sales can also produce some great finds. There are plenty of online forums and sale listing sites that offer collectors even more buying options. You can also use these places to sell pieces of your own.

Before purchasing a stuffed animal for your collection, consider referring to a price guide. While these guides are not the be all, end all of what you should pay, they will give you a general idea of what the current value of the collectible is. Collecting stuffed animals is a hobby that anyone can appreciate, and one that is considered to be quite a nice investment.
